Regular, Medium, Large or XL? Crab bee hoon sizes explained

The size ladder
Our whole-crab dishes come in five sizes. The same prices apply to the Crab Bee Hoon Soup, Black Pepper, Laksa and Chilli Crab. Cheese Crab Bee Hoon begins at Medium.

What the numbers mean
A Regular crab weighing 350g to 400g is a modest crab. Add the bee hoon and broth and you have a bowl for one person. A Medium crab is about half as heavy again, which is more crab to crack and more shell to discard. Large and XL are crabs you share, or crabs for a person who has come for the crab and plans to take their time.
The ladder is not linear. From Regular to Medium the price rises by $19.00, from Medium to Large by $15.00, from Large to XL by $15.00, and from XL to XL+ by $40.00. The kitchen has not published how it sets the steps, so we do not explain them.
Live weight, cooked weight, and what we do not know
Crab weights can mean two different things. Live weight is the crab before cooking and includes the shell, which makes up most of it. Cooked weight is lower. The kitchen has printed weight bands for Regular to XL but has not said which kind they are. For comparison, 8 Crabs, a delivery business, prints both figures for its crabs, and its page shows the cooked weight at about 60 per cent of the live weight (400g to 500g live, 240g to 300g cooked).
We are not saying our crabs follow that ratio. We are saying that without a live or cooked label, our printed weights should not be read as meat weight. If the kitchen confirms which one it prints, we will update this page.
We also have no printed weight for XL+. It appears in the ordering system at $128.80 and is the largest size. An earlier top size, called XXL, was listed in 2022 at $108.80 and described as about 1.3kg by one writer. We do not know whether XL+ is the same crab under a new name, so we do not claim that.
Which size should I order?
- One person, one dish: Regular.
- One person who wants leftovers of shell to crack, or two people sharing with sides: Medium. Add crab fried rice or crab cakes from the other dishes.
- Two to three people: Large or XL for one crab, or one of the flower-crab sets, which are priced by the set and serve two to four.
- A table that wants one grand crab: XL or XL+, ordered a day ahead.
Reviewers have reported splitting a Regular between two people. We repeat that as a report, not a promise.
Whole crab or flower crab?
The flower-crab sets include scallops, clams or prawns as well as crab, and they are priced for sharing: $68.80 for two to three people, $88.80 for three to four. A whole mud crab is a single, larger animal. If you want one big crab, order by size. If you want variety, order a set. Details are on the other crab dishes page.
Ordering by size
Choose the size at the ordering site. Pre-order online at least a day ahead for whole-crab dishes; same-day availability at the counter depends on the day’s crab. To see the size and price for the signature dish alone, go to DonChef’s Crab Bee Hoon Soup, or open the full menu.
Questions people ask
Is a Regular crab bee hoon enough for two?
The Regular is sold as a one-person portion. Some diners have said they shared one between two. We would not plan on it for two hungry adults; add a side, or step up to Medium.
What does XL+ weigh?
The kitchen has not published a weight for XL+. The ordering system lists it at $128.80 as the top size. Ask the hotline if the weight matters to you.
Are the weights live weight or cooked weight?
The kitchen has not said. One delivery competitor, 8 Crabs, prints both live and cooked weights for its crabs (for example, 400g to 500g live is 240g to 300g cooked), which shows how large the gap can be. Until the kitchen confirms, treat our printed bands as the kitchen's figures, not as a promise of meat weight.
What is the cheapest way to try the crab?
The Regular Crab Bee Hoon Soup at $39.80 as of October 2026. If you also want the herbal broth for more people, the ordering site lists a Bee Hoon and Soup add-on at $8.80.
