Is our crab bee hoon halal? No: here is why and what we do
Not Halal-certified. Here is exactly what we do and do not serve.
Quick answer
No. Chicken Pie Kitchen & Don Signature Crab is not Halal-certified by MUIS, and we do not claim that any of our products are Halal. We do not serve pork or lard in any outlet, but the crab soup is cooked with cooking wine and we serve alcohol at the Tyrwhitt Road flagship, so we cannot be certified.
The plain answer
Chicken Pie Kitchen & Don Signature Crab is not Halal-certified by MUIS, and we do not claim that any of our products are Halal. We strictly do not serve any pork or lard in all our outlets. However, we do serve alcohol in our flagship restaurant located at 39 Tyrwhitt Road. Therefore, we are unable to be Halal-certified.
That statement is the kitchen’s own wording, as of October 2026. We repeat it here without softening it, because it is the answer to the question you came with.
What the crab soup contains
The kitchen’s FAQ says: “Our Signature Crab Bee Hoon soup is cooked with cooking wine and herbs such as ginger, yam and Angelica root (more commonly known as Dang Gui).” The kitchen adds that it has children and pregnant customers who still enjoy it, and advises asking your doctor or gynaecologist. See Dang Gui in crab soup.
So there are three separate facts, and each is true on its own:
- No pork, no lard in any of the kitchen’s outlets.
- Cooking wine in the crab soup.
- Alcohol is served at the Tyrwhitt Road flagship.
Together they mean we do not describe the food as halal and do not suggest that it is. The ingredients are listed in what is in the soup, and the other dishes are on the menu.
What about the other dishes?
We have not published a wine-by-wine list for every dish. The kitchen’s FAQ speaks about the soup. Dishes such as the black pepper, laksa, cheese and chilli styles are cooked in other sauces, and the kitchen has not told us whether wine is used in them. If this matters to you, ask the hotline before you order. The seafood bee hoon sets, the crab rice and the other dishes are in the same position.
What this means for you
- If you eat only halal-certified food, our crab dishes are not suitable.
- If you avoid pork and lard but do not require certification, you may decide for yourself. The cooking wine is the matter to weigh.
- If you avoid alcohol for any reason, do not order the crab soup, and ask about the other dishes.
Finding certified places
The Muslim Religious Council of Singapore (MUIS) maintains the halal certification scheme and a directory of certified establishments. Look there, not here, for certification. We list a few places in our disclosed crab bee hoon guide that published round-ups describe as having halal options, and we say plainly that we have not verified them.
If you were also asking about pies, the same wording applies to them: the pie side of the kitchen is not Halal-certified either, and donpies.com answers that question in full. For a list of certified pie sellers, see halal pies in Singapore at piesingapore.com.
How the statement is reviewed
The wording at the top of this page is the statement on the kitchen’s own home page, which shows that it was last reviewed on 25 August 2026. We copy it exactly rather than paraphrase it, so that nobody has to wonder whether a rewording changed the meaning. If the kitchen’s statement changes, this page changes with it.
If you are hosting a mixed group
If some of your guests need halal-certified food, our crab dishes will not work for them, and you may prefer a venue that holds certification. If your group is mixed and everyone is comfortable with the facts above, the practical details are in group dining and how to order. Whatever you decide, we would rather you decide with the plain facts than with a hope.
Questions people ask
Is the crab bee hoon soup cooked with alcohol?
It is cooked with cooking wine and herbs such as ginger, yam and Angelica root (Dang Gui). That is the kitchen's own wording. A reviewer reported Shaoxing Chinese white wine.
Is there pork or lard in your food?
No. We strictly do not serve any pork or lard in any of our outlets.
Do you serve alcohol?
Yes, at the Tyrwhitt Road flagship. That is one of the reasons we cannot be Halal-certified.
Where can I find halal-certified crab bee hoon?
We cannot certify other places. The MUIS Halal Directory lists certified establishments. Published round-ups also name a few places with halal menus, which we list in the disclosed guide with a note that we have not checked their certification.
